About us: Our Journey Together

Discover Cornerstone Christian Centre, situated in the village of Evenwood, in the heart of picturesque Teesdale.  Learn about our history, our values and how we serve the Evenwood community with warmth and dedication.  We invite you to be a part of our story.

Humble Beginnings

Cornerstone Christian Centre is a local, community-focused church, based in Evenwood in County Durham.  Our church has been a well-known part of our village since 1928, grounded in our mission statement: ‘Church Serving the Community.’

Our church was birthed from a miracle.  Our very first pastor, Miss Nellie Welford, was literally on her death bed in the 1920s.  Against all medical advice, a few Christian friends believed in the healing power of God, so they took Miss Welford to Bishop Auckland (on a horse-drawn ambulance) to Stephen Jeffrey’s Healing Crusade.  Miraculously, she was healed.  She became Pastor at Evenwood Pentecostal Church until the 1970s!

In the 1990s, we moved down to the old Methodist building in Evenwood, later becoming Cornerstone Christian Centre.

In the past couple of years, we have fully renovated and refurbished the whole of our building here at Cornerstone.  We are blessed to have such a great facility which is for the local community as well as a place of faith and worship.

What we believe

We are proud to be part of Assemblies of God UK, a Pentecostal group of churches in the UK.   Visit www.aoggb.com for more details.

We believe every individual can and should have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and have the opportunity to be part of a local, vibrant church.

Our core beliefs are:

  1. The Bible – The Bible is the inspired, authoritative, and trustworthy Word of God.
  2. One God – There is one God, eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  3. Jesus Christ – Jesus is fully God and fully man; He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died for our sins, rose bodily from the dead, ascended to heaven, and will return again.
  4. Salvation – Salvation is by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone.
  5. The Holy Spirit – The Holy Spirit indwells every believer, empowering them for holy living and service.
  6. Baptism in the Holy Spirit – A distinct experience for believers that empowers them for witness and ministry, often accompanied by spiritual gifts.
  7. Spiritual Gifts – The gifts of the Holy Spirit, including prophecy, healing, tongues, and miracles, are for the Church today.
  8. The Church – The Church is the body of Christ, called to worship God, make disciples, and serve the world.
  9. Water Baptism – Believers are baptised by full immersion as a public declaration of their faith.
  10. Communion – The Lord's Supper is observed in remembrance of Christ's death until He returns.
  11. Divine Healing – Healing is provided through Christ's atoning work and believers are encouraged to pray for the sick.
  12. The Return of Christ – Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly.
  13. Resurrection and Judgment – There will be a bodily resurrection of all people, with eternal life for those who trust Christ and eternal judgment for those who reject Him.

Making an impact in Evenwood and the local area

We actively serve the Evenwood community through a variety of weekly events, including: Toddler Group, Leisure Café, Oasis Café, Transformations Craft Group and Messy Church, among others.

In recent years, we have witnessed significant growth, with new individuals regularly joining us for worship and community activities.  We are delighted to be a church family for all, where each person has a place and where everyone receives a warm welcome.

"Coming to Cornerstone feels like being at home.  I felt so welcome and a part of things straightaway.”
